Soak-In Black Sands Beach & Shelter Cove

A geological marvel most only see in pictures, beach-lovers simply have to visit this place in person. Few stretches of North American coastline elicit the level of intrigue and fascniation that the Shelter Cove Black Sand Beach arrouses. A mystical 3.5-mile run of the Lost Coast in Humboldt County, the beach is quiet and secluded, ideal for swimming, surfing, and sunbathing. The neighboring community of Shelter Cove features a picturesque golf course & fine dining as well.

  • Why is there black sand?

The charcoal-gray and black sands actually come from above! Centuries of eroding shale cliffs along the coast have resulted in an otherworldly landscape you have to see to believe.
  • How cold is the water?

While "warm" by Northern California standards, it won't be as mild as off beaches down south. With a wetsuit though, it's perfect for surfing!
